This posting is right on target, however I think that those trying to turn the issue into something about Veterans is something of a red herring that those in support of the Winter Shelter Program are using to obfuscate the issue. The issue is not about veterans, the homeless, aid services for the homeless, etc... It's about the impact hosting a homeless shelter will have in the neighborhood close to Pacific Park. Over time, as more and more homeless gravitate to the shelter, those that prey on them will also come. That is my concern.

I also question where the statistic, mentioned in the City Council meeting, "40% of the homeless are veterans" comes from, and how do we know that they're at the Burbank Winter Shelter. I've read the reports done after last years WSP and nothing is mentioned of such a stat.

Kate, I was glad to see your comment about The Office. Bob and I are always saying we want to stop in there, but it's usually when we are on our way to somewhere else. Maybe this will help to remind us to make it a destination.
Thanks, Maryellen

Great points MaryEllen. I certainly agree with you about the vets. I know that once they are diagnosed with a mental illness they do receive benefits every month. And your right, what they need is a hospital with social workers and advocates to get that diagnoses and the help they really need.
