Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation

If you live in Burbank and would like to know more of the history of Aviation in Burbank, you should stop by the Portal of the Folded Wings. It is located just south of the Airpot in the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery. It was originally the entrance and the main offices of the Cemetery when ti first opened in 1924. It designed by Kenneth MacDonald Jr a well known San Francisco architect. It became an aviation shrine in 1953 on the 50th anniversary of the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk on December 17th 1903. It is only open 3 hours a month on the first sunday 1pm until 3pm, when the weather is not cold or rainy. If you lived here in Burbank a wile you’ve probably driven by Tony’s Darts Away its a small place on Magnolia in-between Buena Vista St & Victory Blvd, Tony’s has gone thru some changes and is not just the on menu, it has been remodeled and under new ownership luckily the new owner has the same name as the place Tony. The beers are all Draft, all Craft, and all California . It is set to open Tonight.

Larry L. Maxam Park

If you’ve been by the corner of Screenland and Pacific Ave. lately ,I’m sure you have noticed some construction going on. The park’s name is being changed to honor Larry L. Maxam, one of Burbank’s most decorated soldiers.

This Marine had a lot of awards and honors including one of the most venerable, the Medal of Honor. T he park Dedication Ceremony will be Saturday, April 17 at 11.am there will be guest speakers and entertainment.

Plant-a-Tree Ceremony

The Burbank Civic Pride Committee invites citizens, organizations, and businesses to participate in Burbank’s 55th anniversary of “Plant-A-Tree Month.” Your generous contributions will go toward raising funds to purchase new trees to be planted this year at Stough Park.
Donor certificates will be awarded at the Plant-A-Tree ceremony which will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Stough Park, 1335 Lockheed View Drive.
Donations will be accepted through the end of March. However, donations must be submitted by March 18 to be listed in the program. For further information, call the City’s Public Information Office at (818) 238-5840.

The Liberty Belle B-17 Flying Fortress

Curiosity Killed the Cat

One of the items on tonights City Council meeting is very close to ours hearts hear at BurbankSoup.

Something very sad happened here in Burbank a few weeks ago. Sadly it occurs every day all over the country.

A few weeks ago 3 cats were killed while a home was being fumigated. Yes we are angry, yes we are sad, we are looking for blame. But there is no one to blame, except the cats. Can we try to prevent this from happening again? Can we protect our inquisitive kittens from such a horrible fate? Yes, yes we can, and yes we should.

We are proposing that Burbank require all fumigation companies to give neighboring residents 48 hours notice before fumigating with a lawn sign. A lawn sign would give cat owners, as well as the care takers of stray cats, notice to remove cats from the area and keep them safe. This idea was first proposed in L.A. in 2008, however, we cant seem to find out if it ever went through. No matter. Burbank is progressive and the catolist for animal rights. No doubt you’ll recall Burbank banned the declawing of animals just a few weeks ago.
We live in a town full of animal lovers and so far the response from City Council has been encouraging. What can you do? You want to help? Show up tonight at the city council meeting. If you can make a less than 5 minute speech, great. If not just show up. A full meeting room brings attention to the issue and lets council know we are serious.
